Foster later joined Beamer's coaching staff at Virginia Tech in 1987. Frank hired former Murray State defensive back, Bud Foster as a graduate assistant in 1981. In his six years as head coach, Beamer compiled a record of 42–23–2 (.642). In 1981, after two seasons as defensive coordinator, Frank was promoted to head coach.
